Our Care team is here to help the whole family come to terms with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, right from the point of diagnosis. We are here year-round, in a crisis, offering extra emergency respite and overnight care for all our families at home or in hospital. We are also there when the worst happens, providing where needed, emotional and practical assistance 24 hours a day at the end of a child’s life, and child bereavement support.
Whether a child is in hospital, at home or parents choose to use the Mermaid Room at our Corfe Mullen hospice or the Pegasus Room in our Devizes hospice, we are there for them. Julia’s House can offer round-the-clock end-of-life care completely tailored to the needs and wishes of the family.
Our Mermaid and Pegasus Rooms are peaceful, self-contained suites where families can stay with their child. They can have complete privacy, but know that help is on hand.
And because each child – each family – has dedicated nurses and carers they have got to know and trust, they can take comfort from having friendly, familiar faces around them, supporting them at this difficult time.
All our families are offered £1,000 towards the cost of their child’s funeral. No family should have the additional burden of financial worries at such a harrowing time. Nurses and carers also put together a memory box for each child. Precious memories of their time at Julia’s House.
Our support for families does not end with the death of a child. We continue our child bereavement support to support families for up to three years, including specialist therapy and bereavement support for parents and siblings.
“By offering totally flexible care we are giving families a choice over the type of support they want. It is a much more intimate, comforting experience. We can’t change the outcome for these families, but we can change the quality of the journey.”
Claire, Julia's House Community Nurse
“I can honestly say Julia’s House transformed our experience of having Chiara at home. They became part of our family. The nurses continue to support us and I feel I can talk to them at any time. Our family has been on a journey with Chiara and Julia’s House has been a special part of that journey.”
Paola, Julia's House Ambassador and mum to Chiara, who died of a brain tumour aged 4
I have learnt to slow down, to be able to give families the time they need and through giving that time really come to know who they are and what they need from Julia’s House
